We have attempted to document common Cyber Classroom problems on this page. If you cannot find an answer to your problem, please contact Pearson Technical Support at
media.support@pearsoned.comIssues with running the Cyber Classroom under Internet Explorer
I am running Internet Explorer 5.0. When I start the Cyber Classroom, I see a dialog box which prompts me to either Connect to the Internet or Work Offline. If I select Work Offline, the Cyber Classroom fails to start.
When I reboot my system after using the Cyber Classroom, I see the following error message: This page cannot be found.
On some systems, the "Smart Start" feature does not work after system reboot. If this happens on your system, do the following to start the Cyber Classroom:
<CD-ROM drive Letter>:\8524g5\start.htm.*
Note that its important to do #1 above first, as this launches some background programs that are needed.
* Please note: This example assumes you are running the Java 2 Multimedia Cyber Classroom. If you are running a different Cyber Classroom, the parent directory of the "start.htm" file will have a different numeric name. It will be the only such directory in the CD-ROM's root directory. Likewise, the shortcut you use to launch your cyber classroom will be different.
Each time I attempt to start the Cyber Classroom, I receive a "connection refused" error.
You are probably connected to a Local Area Network and accessing the Internet through a proxy server. To correct this problem, you must tell your browser to ignore the Proxy server for the Cyber Classroom only. For Internet Explorer 5.0, do the following
If you are using IE 4.0, do the following:
Issues with running the Cyber Classroom under Netscape Navigator
When I click on the bug icons in the left margin of the main window, the link fails and I’m simply taken to the top of the page. The Tip window never opens.
Many of the links in the Cyber Classroom use Javascript and Cascading Style Sheet language. You have support for these turned off in Netscape. To turn on support, do the following:

If you have Automatic proxy configuration checked, do the following:
NOTE: When using this profile, you can run the Cyber Classroom but you cannot get out to the Internet.
I am attached to the Internet with a Cable modem. When I attempt to start the Cyber Classroom, I receive a "connection refused" error.
Cable modems are configured to use a Proxy server. Since the Cyber Classroom supplies its own local web server (Xitami) you browser cannot find the local web server and cannot start. To correct this problem, you must tell your browser to ignore the Proxy server for the Cyber Classroom only:
If you have Automatic proxy configuration checked, do the following:

Non-browser specific issues
When I attempt to run one of the Java applications, I receive the following error message:
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:Welcome1,"
The problem may be with the CLASSPATH environment variable on your system. If you have older versions of Java installed, or there are other programs that use Java installed, there is often a CLASSPATH environment variable. In Java 2, you are not supposed to have a CLASSPATH environment variable.
Assuming you are running Win98, you should edit c:\autoexec.bat and make sure that there is no CLASSPATH variable defined (be sure to scroll through the entire file). On WinNT or 2000, you will need to use the System option in the control panel to review your environment variables.
Some of the applications do not run when I click on the execute icon in the Code Examples window.
On some systems, the application that write to the console do not run properly. An example would be Figure 2.1. When you attempt to execute this program, a DOS window opens then closes immediately.
We are working on a fix to this problem. In the meantime, you can run these programs manually by doing the following:
I can start the Cyber Classroom, but none of the links in the navigation frame on the left work.
You need to replace a Cyber Classroom file on your system. Do the following:
NOTE: The "Smart Start" and "Course Completion" features will not work after you make this change
I know that on some Windows 95 systems the Cyber Classroom runs better in Netscape than Internet Explorer, but Explorer is my default browser and I don't want to change that. How can I run the Cyber Classroom in Netscape and still have Explorer be my default browser?
This is easy to do. All you need to do is start Netscape correctly and load in the appropriate file from the Cyber Classroom CD-ROM. Here are the specific instructions:
