Issues with running the Cyber Classroom under Internet Explorer
I am running Internet Explorer 5.0. When I start the Cyber Classroom, I see a dialog box which prompts me to either Connect to the Internet or Work Offline. If I select Work Offline, the Cyber Classroom fails to start.
- Select Tools->Internet Options.
- Select the Connections Tab
- Select the radio button: "Never dial a
connection."
- Apply the change and quit IE.
- Restart the Cyber Classroom in the normal way (Start
Button -> Programs -> Prentice Hall Cyber Classroom -> Java 2
Multimedia Cyber Classroom)*. You see a dialog box that asks if you want to
Work Offline or to Try Again. Select Try Again and the Cyber Classroom
should run fine.
When I reboot my system after using the Cyber Classroom,
I see the following error message: This page cannot be found.
On some systems, the "Smart Start" feature does not work after system reboot. If this happens on your system, do the following to start the Cyber Classroom:
- Start the Cyber Classroom in the normal way (Start
Button -> Programs -> Prentice Hall Cyber Classroom -> Java 2
Multimedia Cyber Classroom)*.
- Manually load the following page into the browser
using the browser's File->Open option:
<CD-ROM drive Letter>:\8524g5\start.htm.*
Note that its important to do #1 above first, as this launches some background programs that are needed.
*
Please note:
This example assumes you are running the Java 2 Multimedia Cyber
Classroom. If you are running a different Cyber Classroom, the parent
directory of the "start.htm" file will have a different numeric
name. It will be the only such directory in
the CD-ROM's root directory. Likewise, the shortcut you use to
launch your cyber classroom will be different.
Each time I attempt to start the Cyber Classroom, I receive a "connection refused" error.
You are probably connected to a Local Area Network and accessing the Internet through a proxy server. To correct this problem, you must tell your browser to ignore the Proxy server for the Cyber Classroom only. For Internet Explorer 5.0, do the following
- Select the Tools menu
- Select Internet Options
- Select the Connections tab.
- Select the LAN Settings button
- Check the box labeled "Bypass proxy server for
local address"
- Select OK, then Apply.
- Close IE and restart the Cyber Classroom.
If you are using IE 4.0, do the following:
- Select the View menu
- Select Internet Options
- Select the Connection tab
- Check the box labeled "Bypass proxy server for
local address"
- Select OK, then Apply.
- Close IE and restart the Cyber Classroom.
Issues with running the Cyber Classroom under Netscape Navigator
When I click on the bug icons in the left margin of the main window, the link fails and I’m simply taken to the top of the page. The Tip window never opens.
Many of the links in the Cyber Classroom use Javascript and Cascading Style Sheet language. You have support for these turned off in Netscape. To turn on support, do the following:
- Start Netscape
- Select the Edit Menu
- Select Advanced
- Check the boxes labeled "Enable
JavaScript" and "Enable style sheets"
- Apply the changes, close and then restart the cyber classroom.
Each time I attempt to start the Cyber Classroom, I receive a "connection refused" error.
You are probably connected to a Local Area Network and accessing the Internet through a proxy server. To correct this problem, you must tell your browser to ignore the Proxy server for the Cyber Classroom only:
- Select the Edit menu
- Select Advanced, then Proxies.
- If you have the Manual proxy configuration radio
button checked, do the following (if you have Automatic proxy configuration
checked, go to 8 below):
- Select View
- I the box at the bottom labeled "Do not use
proxy servers for domains beginning with:" enter 127.0.0.1
- Select OK then OK again.
- Close Netscape and restart the Cyber Classroom.
If you have Automatic proxy configuration checked, do the following:
- Create a new Netscape profile.
- Start Netscape using the new profile.
- Select Edit->Preferences.
- Select Advanced then Proxies.
- Check the radio button that reads: "Manual
proxy configuration."
- In the HTTP field, enter 127.0.0.1
- In the Port field entry for HTTP, enter 8009.
- In the box that reads: "Do not use proxy
servers for domains beginning with:" enter 127.0.0.1.
- Press OK, then OK again, then restart Netscape.
- Launch the cyber classroom from the start button.
When Netscape starts, select the new profile, then proceed into the cyber
classroom.
NOTE: When using this profile, you can run the Cyber
Classroom but you cannot get out to the Internet.
I am attached to the Internet with a Cable modem. When I attempt to start the Cyber Classroom, I receive a "connection refused" error.
Cable modems are configured to use a Proxy server. Since the Cyber Classroom supplies its own local web server (Xitami) you browser cannot find the local web server and cannot start.
- Select the Edit menu
- Select Advanced, then Proxies.
- If you have the Manual proxy configuration radio
button checked, do the following (if you have Automatic proxy configuration
checked, go to 8 below):
- Select View
- I the box at the bottom labeled "Do not use
proxy servers for domains beginning with:" enter 127.0.0.1
- Select OK then OK again.
- Close Netscape and restart the Cyber Classroom.
- Create a new Netscape profile.
- Start Netscape using the new profile.
- Select Edit->Preferences.
When Netscape starts, select the new profile, then proceed into the cyber classroom.
NOTE: When using this profile, you can run the Cyber Classroom but you cannot get out to the Internet.
Non-browser specific issues
Some of the applications do not run when I click on the execute icon in the Code Examples window.
On some systems, the application that write to the console do not run properly. An example would be Figure 2.1. When you attempt to execute this program, a DOS window opens then closes immediately.
We are working on a fix to this problem. In the meantime, you can run these programs manually by doing the following:
- Start Windows Explorer
- Select Program Files, then Prentice Hall, then Cyber
Classroom, then cgi-bin, then code.
- Double-click on the MS-DOS batch file. For example, if you are attempting to run figure 2.1, you would double-click on fig02_01.bat
I know that on some Windows 95 systems the Cyber
Classroom runs better in Netscape than Internet Explorer, but Explorer is my
default browser and I don't want to change that. How can I run the Cyber
Classroom in Netscape and still have Explorer be my default
browser?
This is easy to do. All you need to do is start
Netscape correctly and load in the appropriate file from the Cyber Classroom
CD-ROM. Here are the specific instructions:
- First install Netscape. Make sure that if
you're using a proxy server, you tell Netscape to ignore the proxy server
for the address 127.0.0.1. This is done under Netscape’s
Edit->Preferences->Advanced-Proxies-View options.
- Start Windows Explorer and double-click on the
file c:\program files\prentice hall\cyber
classroom\bin\Xitami\xiwin32.exe. This starts the Xitami web server.
(Note that you can place a Xtami shortcut on your desktop and just
double-click it).
- Start Netscape
- In Netscape, load the following file using
the File->Open Page->Choose File selections:
D:\8425g5\start.htm.* "D" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM
drive. The name of the folder that contains the start.htm file that
you need to load will vary depending on the product. But there will be only
one such folder in the root of the CD-ROM drive.
