Virus Warnings

(Updated 7/30/02)

The latest versions of Norton anti-virus software will indicate the presence of a W95.CIH.corrupt virus on the CD. This is actually not a virus, and your computer is in no danger of being infected by a virus as a result of running the UML CD.

In late 1999, during the original production of the UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom, the build tree became infected with the W95.CIH virus, and was immediately cleaned with Norton Anti-Virus. However, while Norton removed all of the malicious code, it left some header information which caused Norton anti-virus programs to mistakenly report the existence of a virus. In November 2001, we cleaned the files again and published updated CDs. At the time, Norton did not report the existence of a virus. However Norton recently updated their Virus definition files and it again mistakenly identifies the remaining header files as viruses. There is no virus on the UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom. Still, Norton Anti-Virus will not allow you to install or copy the CD to your hard disk, due to the erroneous virus identification.

You may disable your anti-virus program or configure your anti-virus program to refrain from scanning .exe files in order to install and use the UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom.

We are in the process of creating a new CD that will be completely clean of any virus information files. To be placed on the list to receive a new CD when ready please send an e-mail to ptgi@pearsoned.com.

And we thank you for your patience in this matter.

Installation Issues

Installing Cyber Classroom products on Windows 2000

Because of Window 2000's security model, you must be logged in as the Administrator when you install the Cyber Classroom. The installation will fail if you log in as a general user and input the Administrator password when prompted to do so during the installation.

Once you finish the installation, you must either run the Cyber Classroom as Administrator, or make the following folders, and all of their subfolders, writeable by everyone.

For The UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom the folder is:

C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG

Starting the UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom

NOTE: After installing the Cyber Classroom, you MUST have the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive in order to run it. All of the data files for the Cyber Classroom reside on the CD-ROM, not on your hard disk.

If attempts to start the UML Cyber Classroom with the CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive fail, you can manually start the Cyber Classroom by doing the following:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Start your web browser.
  3. Assuming that your CD-ROM drive is drive D: load the file D:\8701d7\index.htm into your browser

Note: the links will only work if you've installed the Cyber Classroom prior to running it.

Assessment Issues

The Practice Exam for Chapter 4 of the UML Multimedia Cyber Classroom is missing from the CD-ROM. Follow these steps to install it on your system. These instructions assumes that the Cyber Classroom was installed in the default location on your C: drive and that your CD-ROM drive is drive letter D:

  1. Extract the contents of this zip file to C:\.
  2. To take the chapter 4 practice exam, load the following file into your web browser: C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG\Cyber Classroom\8701d7_patch\ch04\review\index.htm.

NOTE: This does not fix the link to chapter 4 Practice Exams in the Assessment View.  Because that link is hard-coded on the CD-ROM itself, it will always be broken. When you want to access the Chapter 4 practice exam, you will always need to manually load the file C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG\Cyber Classroom\8701d7_patch\ch04\review\index.htm

NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is a drive letter other than drive D, you will need to change the "d:" drive letter designation to the drive letter of your CD-ROM in the following files. You can do this by opening each of these files in Windows Wordpad and searching on "d:".

  1. C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG\Cyber Classroom\8701d7_patch\ch04\review\nav.htm
  2. C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG\Cyber Classroom\8701d7_patch\scripts\runccr.js
  3. C:\Program Files\Pearson PTG\Cyber Classroom\8701d7_patch\scripts\kxbooch.js
